This session will introduce the audience to the concept of using microactivism as a proactive response to the microaggressions--and macroaggressions--our students and patrons face every day, from slurs and stares to homelessness and physical violence. How can we, in our jobs as librarians, be mindful of systems of power and violence in order to dismantle them? The answer starts with dissolving the silos between public and academic to work together in providing sensitive services to our users by enacting microactivism. In the end, In the face of macroaggression and activism such as police brutality and the resulting #blacklivesmatter movement and the Charleston terror attack, is microactivism enough, or can it serve as a gateway drug and professional partner to participation in larger movements?
